Matt Trautman, aka The Captain, is a professional triathlete hailing from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Matt competes all over the globe in 70.3 & Ironman events. He is one of the top ranked long distance triathletes in South Arica, holding both Ironman 70.3 course records on home shores.

Born in the small sports mad town of Pietermaritzburg, Matt spent much of his early childhood playing a wide variety of competitive sport at a top school and provincial level.

As his love for longer; harder and more testing sporting endeavours grew, Matt turned his attention to kayaking. He went on to race a number of competitive Dusi and Non Stop Dusi Canoe marathons and represented South Africa at the Junior World Champs.

After finishing school, Matt took up sailing and for the next 10 years immersed himself in the world of competitive yacht racing. Winning the Cape to Rio, skippering the highly successful 46ft’er “Tonnerre 3” to numerous race wins, and becoming the first South African to complete the Solo Mini Transatlantic yacht race were some of the highlights.

Seeking out a new challenge Matt headed home at the end of 2012 and took up the sport of triathlon. Whilst completing his studies in exercise science, Matt would go on to win his age group at Ironman South Africa and finish 2nd in his age group and 30th overall at the Ironman World Champs in 2013. Since turning pro, Matt won Ironman Wales in 2014 and has since notched up multiple race victories around the globe.

In January 2017 Matt was hit by a car whilst out training for the defence of his 70.3 South Africa title. He suffered a compression fracture of his lumbar vertebra and had to have a multiple level spinal fusion as a result. He is busy with the rehab process at home in Stellenbosch whilst furthering his coaching career through Brett Sutton and the Trisutto team.
